All are invited to the MTSO House at Lakeside

Methodist Theological School in Ohio will host a number of gatherings for students, alumni and friends during the East Ohio Annual Conference. The MTSO House, at 324 Sycamore Ave., offers a spacious, open floor plan for gathering and chatting with old and new friends. It will be open for the following events:

Tuesday, June 18

Charge Up, 8-10 a.m. Grab a cup of coffee and take advantage of our charging station to power up your phone.

What You Need to Know:

Recently the United Methodist Women of the East Central District in Iowa published “The Dash,” a poem by Linda Ellis, on its website and also distributed paper copies to those who did not have internet access. Shortly thereafter the UMW was sent a “cease and desist” order from an attorney representing Ms. Ellis. Along with the letter was a photo of a screen capture showing the poem on the UMW website.

The letter ordered that the poem be removed from the website and that all paper copies of the poem be destroyed. It further sought $7,500 from the group as a settlement because it had not asked for permission from Ms. Ellis to reprint the poem. The letter threatened a lawsuit – and cited a previous similar lawsuit that cost the defendant hundreds of thousands of dollars plus attorneys fees – if the UMW didn’t pay the $7,500.

How do you keep this from happening to your church or church group?

Don’t publish “The Dash.”
Receive written permission from the author or the copyright holder of any literary work your church or group would like to include in any publication (bulletins, newsletters, websites, etc).
If you don’t have written permission, don’t publish the literary work, even if you credit the author.

Opportunities at MTSO

Early in May, MTSO is sponsoring two opportunities to consider. The first is “Creating Congregational Cultures of Generosity,” an outstanding church-giving seminar we’re presenting in conjunction with the Lake Institute on Faith & Giving, beginning May 3. (More at www.mtso.edu/lake.)

Includes: housing, meals, accident insurance, MMDC workshop donation, donation to NCJ UMVIM, and afternoon sightseeing in Springfield

Cost: $300.00 (not including transportation)

Spend a week volunteering at the Midwest MissionDistribution Centerputting together sewing, health, school, layette, or personal dignity kits along with flood buckets. You can also repair bikes or sewing machines. Woodworkers are needed to build desks.
