GENERAL DESCRIPTION

At University Circle United Methodist Church we believe that consistent, loving, and nurturing care for young children is a vital part of our life together as a family of faith.  We are seeking an adult to care for children ages birth to three on Sunday mornings, with additional child care hours scheduled in advance as needed.   Primary job responsibilities include 1) caring for children’s basic needs, 2) facilitating developmentally appropriate interactions and activities with children, 3) maintaining a safe, clean environment, 4) working collaboratively with staff and volunteers and 5) establishing warm and trusting relationships with families.

Our programming for young children is developmentally appropriate.  We value play, warm and reciprocal relationships, discovery and joy.  Caregivers plan the environment, schedule, activities and interactions to respond to children’s individual needs.  They support children’s early faith formation by demonstrating kindness, inclusiveness and loving care for others.   At UCUMC, we want the youngest members of our family of faith to feel safe, happy, accepted and loved.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • 21 years of age or older.
  • High school education.
  • Training and degree in child development/early childhood education preferred.
  • Prior experience caring for young children.
  • Provide own transportation
  • Pass criminal background check
  • Complete Safe Sanctuary training
  • Certification in CPR/First Aid for infants/children
  • Work authorization for employment in U.S.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Care for children’s basic needs

1)      Maintain health standards in the child care environment with regard to diaper changing, toileting, hand-washing, preparing and serving food, and sanitizing toys and equipment

2)      Prepare and serve snacks for children and sit with them during snack times.

3)      Help children sleep or rest as needed

4)      Change diapers, help children use the toilet

5)      Identify any health concern of a child that might affect the health or well-being of other children and take appropriate action.

6)      Use appropriate strategies for supporting children who have difficulty separating from parents.

 

Facilitate developmentally appropriate interactions and activities with children

1)      Play with children

2)      Talk with children

3)      Read to and with children

4)      Facilitate activities that encourage curiosity, exploration, and problem-solving appropriate to the development levels of the children

5)      Support the social and emotional development of children by listening, talking with, supporting, and acknowledging feelings

6)      Use guidance strategies to help children manage their behavior and conflicts with others.

 

Maintain a safe and clean environment

1)      Maintain a check-in / check-out procedure for children and their belongings.

2)      Maintain child and family information records

3)      Prepare room and materials before children arrive on Sunday mornings and straighten the room and clean/sanitize toys and materials after all of the children leave.

4)      Maintain list of needed snacks, supplies and equipment (such as crackers, diapers and wipes) and submit them in a timely manner to Director of Education.

5)      Follow Safe Sanctuary policies of University Circle United Methodist Church

6)      Maintain current certification in CPR/First Aid and Child Protection training (at church expense)

Work Collaboratively with Families, Staff and Volunteers

1)      Greet families and children warmly upon arrival on Sunday mornings.

2)      Communicate verbally with families about their child and encourage them to share information that is relevant to their child’s care and basic needs.

3)      Respect individual family values, preferences and concerns

4)      Maintain confidentiality at all times.

5)      Communicate weekly with Director of Education.

6)      Work collaboratively with other staff members caring for children and with volunteers

 

Perform related duties as assigned

Work Hours:

This is a paid, hourly position.

Sunday hours are 9:00 am to 2:00 pm from September through mid-June.

Sunday hours are 9:30 a.m. to 12 pm in late June, July and August.

Additional hours on other days/evenings may be scheduled in advance and assigned by the Director of Education.
